Survivor Series Primer: Dream Team

Survivor Series is the WWE's 2nd longest running pay per view. It's classified among the company's "Big Four" held annually along with WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and the Royal Rumble. For me personally, Survivor Series rekindles warm feelings of nostalgia from my childhood. Since it's inception in 1987, the event has taken place in November. Every year since then I have associated it's occurrence with the holidays. In recognition of this year's 32nd installment, I created my own Survivor Series dream team to share with you.

Survivor Series is an elimination style tag team match. Teams include 4-5 carefully selected Superstars. The mission is fight and defeat another favorable team. Survivor Series' underlying theme surrounds life's classic battle of good vs. evil. By the time Survivor Series 1989 was underway, I was set in my ways as a good guy. Approaching my 8th birthday I was a little warrior wanting nothing more than to see 'The Ultimate Warriors' defeat 'The Heenan Family.' I vividly recall Survivor Series 1989. That winter, I convinced my mom to buy me my first WWE Magazine in line at the grocery store. For the next several months I flipped through it's colorful pages, and marveled at photos of my favorite Superstars. I further burned Survivor Series 1989 into my memory by watching it over and over again. I got in trouble with my parents for returning the 'Coliseum Video' late to my uncle's video store.

I made the basketball team in middle school, and subsequently became equally fond of both sports. By this time pro wrestling was no longer considered 'real' by the rest of the world. However, it was still very real to me. After years of pleading with my mother, she didn't sign my permission slip to join the wrestling team freshman year in high school. I continued playing basketball for years to come. Now as an adult, I coach JV and Varsity boys high school basketball. My Survivor Series dream team is characterized as your starting 5 in basketball. Generally speaking, these 5 players are selected based on consistency, talent, and versatility to mesh well with the other 4 members. I chose my dream team based on technical wrestling ability, win record, and fan appeal.

Since coined 'the excellence of execution,' Hitman carries the rock up court. Hitman acquired his monicker based on superior in-ring wrestling ability. He led the 'New Generation Era,' and is a 5-time WWE Champion. He's John Wall, the general of my team. Hitman was trained by his father, Stu Hart in the notorious Hart Family Dungeon. Stu Hart is credited for training some of the most notable pro wrestlers of all time there. Any opponent ever to be locked in Hitman's finisher, "The Sharpshooter" has either quit, or fainted. To this day he is known as 'the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.' Hitman was a key participant at the "Montreal Screwjob" in Survivor Series 1997. The screwjob was a shoot in pro wrestling history that ended the New Generation Era.

1.) Point Guard: Bret "Hitman" Hart

The Rock is second in my back-court, and helped carry WWE's following 'Attitude Era.' The Rock is a 2-time Intercontinental Champion, and 8-time WWE Champion. I would describe him as Michael Jordan, my leading scorer. The Rock brought an electrifying new appeal to the brand during this era. He is a 3rd generation Superstar, and at Survivor Series 1996 led his team to victory in his WWE debut.

2.) Shooting Guard: The Rock

The Ultimate Warrior is Lebron James, the best player in the NBA today. Warrior possessed a contagious amount of charisma. He consistently ran to the ring every night he fought, which set him apart. Warrior is the only Superstar in WWE history to hold the Intercontinental Championship, and the WWE Championship at the same time. He destroyed his opponents, like Lebron ferociously slam dunks in games. At Survivor Series 1989 he led his team, 'The Ultimate Warriors' to victory by defeating 'The Heenan Family.'

3.) Small Forward: The Ultimate Warrior

The Undertaker is Tim Duncan, my power forward. His height and presence make him someone I want positioned under the basket at all times. His fan appeal is unlike any other Superstar. His impressive win record of 23-2 at WrestleMania is consistent. The Undertaker is an immovable object, and an unstoppable force. Like Tim Duncan's post reverse pivot move, his "Tombstone" crushes all competition. The Undertaker defeated Hulk Hogan at his WWE debut in Survivor Series 1990. At Survivor Series 1992 he defeated Kamala at the event's first-ever 'casket match.' Wrestle Radio Now sends well-wishes, and our heartfelt prayers to Kamala and his family.

4.) Power Forward: The Undertaker

Andre the Giant, 'The 8th Wonder of the World' is my fearless center. Centers are selected based on talent and height. He led his team to victory by defeating Hulk Hogan's team at the very first Survivor Series in 1987. Currently, Hasheem Thabeet is the tallest player in the NBA standing at 7 ft 3 in tall. The Giant stood taller at 7 ft 4 in.
